Transitions Hair Salon

"Celebrating our first successful (and eco-friendly) year in business!"

Here's what Transitions Hair Salon does to make a difference:

  • Our retail bags are made from 100% recycled materials, are 100% biodegradable, and can be reused as gift bags.
  • We use Eco-friendly blow dryers in our salon (Low EMF and no ozone emission make this dryer easy on the environment)
  • Transitions Hair Salon Recycles, Composts, and uses a clothesline to hang out salon towels! Along with many other methods, we guarantee the lowest amount of waste produced in a local hair salon! We only throw out 1 bag of garbage per month!
  • The Paul Mitchell Tea Tree line funds the planting of enough trees through American Forests to offset all carbon emissions from the brand’s manufacture and distribution.
  • We wash our towels in cold water, in an energy star washing machine, only wash full loads, and hang them out to dry on a clothesline, whenever it is possible to do so.
  • Our toilet paper and paper towel is made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper (Recycled tissue products are just as sanitary as those made from virgin pulp and require 40% less energy to be produced.)
  • We use email notifications, when possible, as opposed to a snail mailing notifications
  • We utilize every inch of paper, front and back, before it goes in the recycling bin
  • We recycle everything, from empty color boxes and bottles to paper products and more
  • All of the hair that we cut will be either donated (to replicate human hair wigs, if the hair is 8" or longer), or it will be composted, to help enrich the soil in our home garden!
  • We offer both individual, machine washable hand towels AND 100% recycled paper towels in the washroom
  • We are in the middle of switching all of our bookkeeping methods into electronic versions of the same methods
  • We use natural cleaning products to clean our salon
  • We serve organic fair trade coffee
  • Save $1.50 when you return empty Paul Mitchell bottles
  • We unplug unused hot tools to save energy
  • We are mindful of water usage at the back bar, and turn off the water in between tasks at the shampoo area
  • Instead of single use coffee creamers and sugar we keep our supplies in bulk containers, and instead of bottled water, we use a Brita filter for tap water as our substitute.
  • Plastic cutlery is NOT an option in our staff lunch room
  • We only mix only what we need when formulating at our Color Bar
  • We exercise "reusable" items as opposed to "disposable" items to cut down on waste
  • We furnished the salon with second hand and refurbished equipment from Habitat For Humanity's ReStore.
  • We stagger our initial energy demand by waiting to 15 to 20 minutes in between turning on electrical devices when we arrive in the morning.
  • we ride our bikes to work, or carpool (both when possible)
  • 2009 is going to be a big year, with many changes to our building, including ideas to change our lighting to be efficient, yet more eco-friendly
